Winter is often not a favorite season for farmers and dogs – but it is also necessary for daily walks and movements. But the snow-icy streets, the cold wind, the salted pavement and the early darkness bring new challenges. The good news is, with a little attention and preparation, winter walks can be safe and even enjoyable.<\/span><\/h5>\n

Cold time = extra protection<\/span><\/h3>\n

Not every dog responds to the same cold. Short-haired dogs, smaller bodies or older dogs get cold much sooner than their larger, furry fellows. If you see your puppy shaking, moving slower or not moving forward, it could be a sign.<\/span><\/p>\n

A well-chosen dog suit is not luxury, but protection: it helps keep the body heat, protects the joints and makes the walk more comfortable. It is important that the dress is not too tight, that it does not interfere with movement, and that it is made of water-flapping material – because snowy slices are not pleasant for anyone.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tip:<\/strong> If you choose dog clothes, make sure it’s easy to give up – no one likes to dress long in cold.<\/span><\/p>\n

Salt and chemicals – enemies of the paws<\/span><\/h3>\n

One of the greatest dangers of winter walks is the salt and chemicals used on pavement. They dry them, crack the paws, and if the dog licks them, they can cause stomach problems.<\/span><\/p>\n

What can you do?<\/span><\/p>\n

  • Use palp cream before walking, which forms a protective layer.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Wash your paws with warm water after walking, then wipe them dry.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • If your dog is very sensitive, the paws can be a good solution (yes, at first it is strange, but many dogs can get used to it).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Visibility – because it soon gets dark in winter<\/span><\/h3>\n

    In winter, we often go for a full walk after work or school. It is particularly important that your dog (and you) be visible.<\/span><\/p>\n

    A reflective leash, a harness or a coat can help a lot, but a LEDs flashing on the collar is almost essential. Not only for motorists but also for cyclists and other walkers.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Plus, the lighter-colored dog clothes are more noticeable during the day and dusk.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Short but quality walks<\/span><\/h3>\n

    It’s okay if you walk a little shorter in winter – it’s about quality. Let your dog sniff, move, play, but watch his signals. If it’s very cold, I’d rather have a shorter walk than a long, freezing circle.<\/span><\/p>\n

    And at home you can have a warm place, a little game or a reward wall – because you can relax after winter walks.<\/span><\/p>\n
