In social media, there are lots of photos and videos about how farmers not only take care of their favorites but also dress them – stylish, practical, or playful. But how did we get here? When did a dog suit turn from simple protective equipment into fashion and self-expression? The history of dog clothing tells not only about the culture of animal husbandry, but also about how human and dog relations have developed over the centuries.

First dog clothes: age of functionality

The origin of the dog clothes goes back a long way. Even in ancient civilizations, the dog appeared as a status symbol and partner. In Egypt, the respect of dogs was so great that killing dogs was a serious crime. At this time, however, according to tombs, the clothes were first and foremost born not because of the fashion in today’s sense, but for the practical purpose of protecting hunting dogs and watchdogs from injuries, cold or hostile animals. These were protective clothing decorated with leather, linen or metal, and they reflected the social status of the master.

In the Middle Ages, hunting was a social event, so the equipment of hunting dogs became a status symbol. In the noble courts, dogs were often dressed in fancy blankets, wearing the coat or colours of the master. They were still more at the edge of usability and representation, but they already had the “fashion” strip in them.

It follows that the first forms of dog clothing, whether made of leather blankets, fancy collar or embroidered textile fabric, were not born as “fashion pieces’, but on the need for mutual trust, joint activity and protection. The cooperative relationship between man and dog allowed the animal to appear to the outside world – and thus the early form, which later served as the basis for dog clothing fashion.

The 19th century: a pet as a partner and fashion supplement

The modern history of dog clothes actually begins in the 19th century. That is when the social change in the role of dogs gradually changed began. With urban development and the spread of civic lifestyle, the dog became increasingly family member and no longer played a functional role.

In the Victorian age (1837-1901), the dress of favorites became particularly fashionable among the English aristocracy and middle class. The illustrative magazines of his age often included dogs wearing fancy coats, silk scarves or hats. There were tailors in London around 1890 who specifically made clothes for dogs. Most of the pieces at the time were still hand-made, and often fit the master’s wardrobe – the color, the material and the decoration were also harmonious.

The 20th century: the balance of functionality and comfort

In the middle of the 20th century, the spread of dog clothes was no longer limited to the aristocracy. In the decades after wars, especially with the spread of urban lifestyle, small breeds, such as dachshund, chihuahua or French bulldog, have become increasingly popular. These breeds are more sensitive to the weather, so the practical function of the dog clothes has come to the fore again.

In the sixties and seventies, raincoats and winter sweaters made of light water-rolling material appeared. At the same time, the fashion world also discovered dog clothes as an expression device: in some major cities, such as New York and Paris, there were already separate dog games shows. The farmers began to consciously pay attention to the appearance of their favorite.

The 21st century: the dog as a lifestyle mirror

Today, dog clothes are not only a practical supplement but also part of a common identity. The fashion industry, which used to serve exclusively human needs, has now recognised the potential of the market in pets. The largest brands, such as Gucci, Moncler or Moschino, are already producing their own dog-care courses, which are not only comfort but also prestige.

Social media has also played a huge role in the development of dogheads. Instagram and TikTok are full of “pet efficiency” profiles, where dogs appear not only as models but as separate brands. This trend also benefits craft and local businesses: there has been an increase in demand for individual, hand-made, sustainable dog clothing.

Modern dog clothing fashion follows three main directions:

Functional minimalism – comfortable, well ventilated, weather resistant pieces that are ideal for walking.

City Style – clean, yet spectacular men that fit the master’s clothing.

Luxury and personalised – premium materials, embroidered names, custom lines, even casual clothing.

Sustainable and animal welfare in fashion

The development of dog clothes is no longer an aesthetic issue. The environmentally conscious approach is increasingly important: manufacturers try to reduce their ecological footprint by using recycled materials, natural textiles and local production. At the same time, the need for ethical, comfortable wear increases – because dog clothes are not the owner’s expression, but the dog’s welfare is the primary objective.

The design of dog clothes now takes into account veterinary and ergonomic aspects: proper fitting, freedom of movement and material use are just as important as appearance. The ideal piece does not interfere with the dog’s movement, does not irritate the skin and matches the needs of the particular breed.

Summary

The story of dog clothes is ultimately a reflection of the relationship between man and dog. From the leather armour of ancient fighting dogs to the Victorian ornaments, to today’s personalized collections, there is the same basic intention: care, protection and love. Modern dog clothing fashion is no longer just a trend – rather a new language with which the host can express what a common life means to him with another being.

For Brizlo, this approach is particularly important: we offer not only clothes, but also philosophy that dogs are not accessories but partners. The style you’re wearing is part of the common story.

Dog clothes are now a natural part of urban life.
