But how do you decide which dog truly suits you? It’s not just about being cute or looking good on Instagram – choosing a dog is a long-term responsibility, and it’s worth approaching it consciously. We have gathered the most important aspects to help you find the ideal canine companion.

1. Lifestyle: urban hustle or rural calm?

Every dog needs exercise, but not to the same extent. If you live in a small apartment, are rarely home, or prefer a calm life, then a calmer, smaller dog (e.g. pug, French bulldog, Bolognese) might be a good choice. If you are active, go hiking, running, a sportier breed with higher exercise needs (e.g. border collie, vizsla, husky) will be the perfect companion.

2. Experience: are you a beginner or an experienced owner?

Some breeds are easier to handle and learn quickly, while others require more patience and experience. If this is your first dog, look for a breed known to get along well with beginner owners – for example, golden retriever, cavalier spaniel, or mixed rescued dogs that shelter caretakers know well and can help you choose the right one for you.

3. Family situation: children, other pets, company

There are breeds that get along especially well with children or other pets. If you have young children in the family, a calm, patient dog is important. If you already have a cat or another dog at home, it’s worth testing the new arrival’s behavior with other animals. Choosing a dog here also gives you the opportunity to give a rescued, already socialized dog a chance.

4. Size and strength: don’t just look at the appearance

A Saint Bernard or German shepherd is beautiful but also strong and requires a lot of space. Large dogs eat more, need more room, and require serious physical strength to keep on a leash. Smaller dogs are easier to transport, although often they have more energy than you might think!

5. Health and grooming

Some breeds are prone to certain diseases or require special grooming (e.g. long hair, skin folds). Consider how much time and money you can regularly spend on grooming, veterinary visits, and quality food. A mixed-breed dog is often more resilient, while purebred dogs have more predictable temperament and size.

6. Rescued or bred?

Shelters are full of dogs longing for love – many of them are already house-trained, vaccinated, microchipped, and can’t wait for someone to take them home. Choosing a purebred dog from a breeder can also be a good decision if you find a reliable, responsible breeder. Whichever path you choose, the most important thing is: don’t decide on a whim!

+ Tip from Brizlo:

Once you know what kind of dog you want, don’t forget about stylish and practical dog clothes – after all, weather, sensitive skin, or even a cool urban look can justify a great piece!
