However, not every dog needs a winter coat, and in some cases, an extra warm layer can do more harm than good. Under the right conditions, though, most dogs benefit from an additional protective layer against harsh weather.

Why do people buy clothes for their dogs?

Dog clothing has become increasingly popular among owners, sparking divided opinions about whether pets need any clothing at all. Some believe it is merely a pointless fashion fad. It is important to understand that for certain dog breeds, appropriate attire can provide comfort and protection, and besides its aesthetic role, it also serves functional purposes. So, the answer to whether pets need to wear clothes is complex and depends on weather conditions and the breed.

When is dog clothing necessary?

Several factors play a role in deciding whether to put a coat on your pet or not. Generally, dogs only need some kind of clothing under certain conditions, such as cold wind, precipitation, and how strong the sun is. Some dogs, especially older ones and small breeds, as well as hairless or thin-coated dogs, benefit from an extra layer during cold periods. It is important to emphasize that even dogs that tolerate cold well have a somewhat lower tolerance for cold when they are pets.

Which dog breeds need clothing?

Small dogs lose body heat more easily, so these breeds benefit from some kind of clothing even at higher temperatures. Small dog breeds include, for example, Chihuahuas, miniature pinschers, and dachshunds. Body fat also helps retain heat, so medium-sized but thin-coated breeds are also recommended to wear clothing. Such breeds include the whippet, greyhound, and Doberman.

Large dogs and thick, long-haired breeds rarely require clothing. In fact, the weight of clothing can reduce the natural insulating properties of the dog’s fur. Some breeds have a double coat, and it is also important to consider the color of the fur: dark fur absorbs heat from the sun better than light fur. Huskies, Newfoundlands, and Pomeranians, for example, rarely (or never) need an extra warming layer.

Weather factors to watch out for

The first and most obvious factor to check before a walk is the temperature. As a starting point, consider the following degrees:

10°C: Dogs that do not tolerate cold well – small-sized, short-haired – may feel uncomfortable.
5°C: Puppies, small or thin-coated dogs, and older dogs should wear clothing to avoid getting too cold even on a short walk.
-6°C: For most dogs, this temperature is too cold and can lead to health problems.

It is important to remember that weather factors do not stop here. Wind can penetrate even the thickest fur, making dogs feel colder.

Wet weather, whether rain, snow, or just wet ground, can be particularly dangerous if the temperature falls below zero. Prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures combined with moisture on the body can quickly cause frostbite.

What materials should we choose?

When buying dog clothing, it is important to ensure that both the material and function of the garment are appropriate. Some materials suit certain environments better, so the first step is to make sure it is compatible with the characteristics of the place where the dog will be. For cold, dry weather, fleece or wool materials are recommended because they retain heat well and are comfortable for dogs. For wet days, water-repellent materials such as nylon or polyester are advisable, as they prevent moisture from reaching the dog’s skin. Knitted dog clothes are also a great solution for cold weather; they are warm, comfortable, and can be personalized and unique.

The right size

The size of dog clothing is extremely important for both comfort and effectiveness. Clothing that is too loose does not provide adequate protection, while clothing that is too tight does not offer sufficient comfort for your pet.

Accurate measurements are needed to ensure the coat fits your dog properly. Each type of dog clothing has its own size chart to help with selection. The three main measurements to consider are the neck, back, and body length. When measuring, your dog should be standing on the ground.

Back length: measure from the base of the neck (withers) to the base of the tail. However, some clothes do not need to reach all the way to the tail, so this is important to keep in mind!
Neck circumference: measure around the base of the neck (withers) where the neck is widest.
Chest circumference: measure at the widest part of the chest – usually just behind the front legs.

A winter coat may not be enough

Ultimately, everyone knows their own dog best and can judge their comfort. Wearing coats may not be comfortable for some dogs and may not be sufficient for long trips. If you notice the following signs in your pet, it is best to simply go back inside: shivering, cold ears and paws, curling up and reluctance to move, nervousness or hyperactivity.

As the temperature drops, dog owners may wonder if their pets need clothing to stay warm during the freezing seasons.
