Types of Dog Hair and Their Care

A dog’s coat not only gives beauty to our pets but also serves a fundamental protective function: it shields them from cold, excessive heat, sunlight, and minor injuries. Since every hair type has different characteristics, the method of care also varies. Therefore, it is worth learning what different coats need.

Short Hair

Short coats lie close to the body, are dense and shiny, such as the coat of a boxer or dalmatian. Their care is relatively simple: brushing a few times a week with a rubber brush or grooming brush is recommended to remove dead hairs and stimulate blood circulation in the skin. Bathing is only necessary when truly justified, for example after rolling in mud.

Long Hair

Long, often multi-layered coats – like those of collies or Afghan hounds – are particularly prone to tangling. Therefore, daily brushing is almost indispensable; otherwise, the hair quickly mats and felts. In many cases, cosmetic trimming is also necessary to keep the coat healthy and allow the dog’s skin to breathe properly.

Wire Hair

Wire-haired dogs – such as schnauzers or fox terriers – have coats that feel coarse and protect the animal very well from environmental effects. Their care, however, is special: besides regular brushing, they also need stripping. This means removing the dead parts of the topcoat by hand or with a special tool, which allows new hair to grow back healthy.

Curly or Wavy Hair

For example, poodles and bichon frisés have soft, curly or wavy coats that look beautiful but require serious attention. Their hair tends to break and easily tangles, so they need to be brushed several times a week. Frequent trimming is also recommended so the coat does not hinder skin ventilation and maintains its elasticity.

Hairless Dogs

Hairless dogs, such as the Chinese Crested, require special care. Since they have no coat, their skin is directly exposed to the weather. In summer, they need to be protected from sunburn with sunscreen; in winter, their skin must be moisturized to prevent drying out. They are also more prone to skin problems, so regular veterinary check-ups are recommended.

Why is regular grooming important?

Caring for a dog’s coat is not merely an aesthetic matter. A clean and regularly groomed coat helps prevent skin diseases, painful inflammations caused by tangles, and contributes to the animal’s comfort. Grooming is also a shared activity that strengthens the bond between dog and owner.

In summary, it can be said that regardless of the hair type, regular care serves not only the dog’s beauty but also its health. A well-groomed dog is happier, feels more comfortable, and remains healthier in the long run.
