As the weather improves, more owners head out with their four-legged companions. We’ve already written about hiking spots in and around Budapest; now we’ve gathered rural locations that are perfect for a weekend outing with a dog. Across the country there are nature-rich routes where not only owners can relax, but dogs can roam more freely, discover new scents and tire themselves pleasantly.
Hiking with a dog does require a bit of extra preparation. It’s worth checking the route difficulty, water availability and how dog-friendly the area is in advance. The places below can be especially good choices if you’re after a calmer, more nature-based experience.
Szakajka-völgy – a peaceful hike in a wild setting
One of the less well-known yet particularly atmospheric parts of the Bakony is Szakajka Valley. This spot may be ideal for those who want to avoid busier tourist routes and prefer a tranquil forest setting.
In the valley streams, shady paths and varied woodland sections alternate, which can be especially pleasant for dogs in the summer heat. The natural terrain offers many new stimuli for them, while owners can enjoy the quiet surroundings.
Do bear in mind that the route can become muddy after rain, so it’s sensible to wear appropriate footwear and to take a towel or spare kit for the dog in the car.
Kőtenger – Kővágóörs’s unique natural attraction
The Balaton-felvidék is full of spectacular hiking spots, and one of the most special is the Kőtenger at Kővágóörs. The huge rock blocks and distinctive stone formations create an atmosphere quite different from a classic forest walk.
The area is ideal for shorter walks, so it can be a good choice even with older dogs or those with lower stamina. The landscape is particularly beautiful in spring and autumn, and it’s usually less crowded then.
Because of the stony sections it’s important to watch your dog’s paws, especially in warm weather when the stones can heat up quickly. At such times it’s best to arrive in the morning or late afternoon.

Mecsek – forest trails and springs with your dog
Mecsek has long been one of Hungary’s most popular hiking areas, and not without reason. The dense woods, cool paths and natural springs can be particularly suitable for dog walks.
There are many different routes in the area, so both beginners and more experienced hikers can easily find terrain of the right difficulty. The springs and shady sections make walks more pleasant even in summer.
Mecsek can be especially exciting for dogs because of the varied terrain: hills, forest tracks, streams and more open areas alternate. However, always observe the rules in nature conservation areas and use a lead where required.
If you plan a longer hike, be sure to take enough water, even if there are springs along the way.
What to consider before a hike?
Whatever route you choose, it’s worth taking care of a few things in advance:
- sufficient water for you and your dog

- tick protection
- lead and ID tag
- treat or small snack
- dog waste bags
In summer it’s particularly important to watch for heat. Dogs can overheat more easily, so rather than hiking at midday it’s better to go in the morning or evening.
